My father -- a kind and quirky happily married man and father of six, now gone for 34 years -- NEVER discussed his family. The only thing we knew was that they were Italian immigrants and died in the 1930s. After five years of family history research, we have discovered that his parents did not in fact die in the 1930s, they were institutionalized in the Rockland and Buffalo (NY) asylums in the 1930s and lived unknown in those asylums until their deaths in 1990 and 2002. How did these two unknown grandparents simply disappeared into institutions for a total of 122 years until their deaths? Why? How does such a thing happen? How does an entire side of the family tree just disappear?

Author is witty and intelligent and will keep the reader caught up in the story all the time. Thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend to all adult readers. Funny anecdotes may make you laugh out loud as I did on several occasions. Very much enjoyed it.

Unbelievable but true! - If you didn't know this was a true story about an immigrant family, you really wouldn't believe it. It's at times heartbreaking to learn how close the author could have come to knowing his grandparents, but opportunities were just missed. In addition to being a compelling family story, this book also provides inspiration and tips for doing your own ancestry research.
